Arterial blood gases is an essential investigation to differentiate between types of respiratory system failure and even knowing the cause of the various acid-base disturbance conditions, e.g: Respiratory acidosis vs. Metabolic acidosis, Respiratory alkalosis vs. Metabolic alkalosis, Mixed and complicated disorders and even knowing the degree of compensation if present and who much should it be.
ABG is essential in cases of acid:base distance as there is diffrential diagnosis for any disorder, particularly in Metabolic Acidosis cases; where some advanced equations are needed to perfect the diagnosis and putting the letters on the lines. Anion Gap, Osmoler Gap, and Delta ratio are the equations needed in these case which will minimise the long list of diagnosises possible.
ABG also helps in differentiating between lung injury vs. ARDS by equations as A-a gradiant, PaO2:FiO2 ratio, and more; also included in this app. This application can also distinguish between either causes of A-a gradient disturbances from the ABG parameters you will enter. And much much more....
